After watching the video of Ken Robinson, I have the sudden inspiration to start drawing again. After my high school teacher told me I'd never make it as an artist, I put away my art pad and brush for good. She said I had "talent", but not enough to make it outside of an art class. Drawing made me happy, and while I won't pursue it as a career, I can at least bring my canvas out of my closet - it can stop hiding in the dark now.
Cheers to a new quarter.

Slancha! See you soon, Sol.
i would draw sitting against a hallway in High School. I would draw amongst my friends and the art teacher would pass by and say i should join his class. I never had as much support at home as i did at school because everyone was in awe and said i should pursue a career in art, music or drama but at home they told me that it simply wouldn't work out. I was burried under honors and AP classes in science, language, english and math but i never put as much effort into it, it seemed a chore because I wasnt great at those subjects. I am not great at art, drama and music. I believe that if I was left to make my own choice I would have dedicated my life to the fine arts. It is difficult know that I am going to study in something that I do not love completely. After watching this video I am again questioning my choice. I find it Ironic that were are in a school that is great for Fine Arts but yet I cannot change. Maybe later i could pursue a career in Fine Arts.
You should post drawing or paintings up so we can see! by the way that you explain all of this im sure they're are great regardless of what your art teacher has told you !
It's amazing how people, places, events, and in this case a film, can manipulate the way we think of others and ourselfs in both a positive and a negative way! This is just an example of how society's standards affects us as individuals. However, we CAN stand up and be just that; INDIVIDUALS! We can all learn from this and grow back if not more into creativity! =]
wow
we need more artist around so please continue with the arts!! stop the conformity of society and bring about new ideas thoughts looks its wonderful! i cant draw for the life of me but how i love to doodle. same as i may not sing that great but i love to sing, and heavens forbid anyone tell you you cant rise above.
@Horse: You'll see me when you'll see me.
@k_alice: That's a touching story you've told, and I think people should be free to pursue, not only what they like, but what they feel passion for. Society has become too focused on the jobs and occupations that will get us out of debt and what will make the most money. Just because we get out of this big hole we dug ourselves into, doesn't necessarily mean we'll be happy in the end. Passion makes things you enjoy, all the more enjoyable, because you put yourself into it. If you decided to push for a Fine Arts major, all the more power to you. Perhaps I will share my art one day, but I am the typical artist, I see all the flaws, the public is the only one who can see the art.
@FB24: I think it's because we're trained, by society of course, to be scared to be an individual - because it means standing on our own two feet, without anyone to support us, or to catch us. Art is a large way to express oneself in the utmost personal way, and when we're critiqued for not being good enough, it hurts our own self esteem. It's not just a comment on a piece of art, it's a comment about ourselves. Society has made us scared to just, put ourselves out there and say: "Hey world! This is me!" I think more creativity would help a lot of people accept who they are as individuals.
@MT: Wow is correct. :)
@PennyLane: Haha, no one ever said you had to be good at something to do it. If it puts a smile on your face - you should keep doing it! Unless of course its something just, completely and utterly unacceptable. But something as harmless as singing, or drawing - just keep smiling, and smile wider while you do it!
I know how you feel. My parents didn't think that I would make it as an artist in life. I was planning on going to art school, but I did a lot of thinking and change my mind. I still wanted a career in art, so I plan was to get my degree and career started in psyhc first, and go to art school after. I'm considering double majoring in Art. But I haven't made it official yet. I'm not sure.
